“Golden Wonga vine” by Wendy Currie
Country: Melbourne, Australia
Parts used: Petals
Amount: Small handful
Extracted by: Mortar
Thinner: Two capfuls of vodka
Application: Brushing
Layers: 2
Substrate: Arches aquarelle watercolour paper. Coated 2 pieces of paper
Created with: Photogram of part of the plant with stem, flowers & leaves
Exposure: 9 days. Approx. 5 days of sunshine & rest overcast or raining. All exposed sitting inside on a window ledge. July, winter 2023
Contrast: ✿✿ (Medium)
Challenges or observations: The petals were crushed using a mortar & pestle, and mixed with a couple of capfuls of vodka, then strained through an old hanky. The liquid was a browny orange colour which darkened during exposure. I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of the image when I finally lifted the plant off the paper.
Additional information: I have used this plant for many photograms, especially cyanotypes. The first time I used it was a very hot day and there was a lot of condensation. Consequently, the plant dried and stuck to the glass like glue. I liked the composition, so have used it for various prints on fabric and paper.
