“Geranium 3” by Michael Barath
Country: USA
Parts used: Powdered spice
Amount: 1 tablespoon
Thinner: Isopropyl alcohol 91%
Application: Brushing
Layers: 1
Substrate: Kodak digital photo paper
Created with: Photogram of geranium flowers
Exposure: 3 hours, August, summer 2023
Contrast: ✿✿✿ (High)
Challenges or observations: After sensitizing the paper with the turmeric and alcohol solution, the geranium flowers were arranged on the paper. Paper and flowers were placed in a contact frame and placed outdoors in direct sunlight. The print was then fixed by dipping it into a solution of 1 tablespoon of borax mixed with 2 cups of warm water, then immersed for approximately 2 seconds. Fixing the image in the borax solution will darken it considerably. Leaving it in too long will darken the anthotype too much. Depending upon the substrate, I fixed the photo for 1 to 10 seconds. Photo paper darkened very quickly; watercolor paper slower.
Additional information: Turmeric is in spice form.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) anthotype by Michael Barath
This anthotype is part of World Anthotype Day
World Anthotype Day was started by AlternativePhotography.com in 2022. In August anthotype artists all over the world celebrate the anthotype process and send in their entries. We add them here to the database and create a reference book for each year. The purpose of the day is to build a large resource where artist can learn which pigmenets and plants that work and draw inspiration from other artists' work. The reference books can be found here:

Volume 1 contains 60 unique anthotype emulsions from 103 artists taking part from 31 countries.
Anthotype Emulsions, Volume 1 – The collective research from photographers on World Anthotype Day 2022

Volume 2 contains 100 unique anthotype emulsions from 139 artists taking part from 31 countries.
