The realm of alternative photography is a large and rich one, but sometimes it is a territory that can be perceived as a pretty lonely place. Because of its wideness, the inhabitants of such domains may feel apart from each other during the explorations of aspects of its beauties in the seclusion of their ateliers, studios and darkrooms, barely acknowledging the existence of others who live in that same land of art and creativity. Thus, some feelings of isolation may arise among those same inhabitants.
Fortunately, there are some people who understand the situation described above, and those persons act (for lack of a better word) as agents who work hard to integrate the citizens of that realm and therefore make its alluded wideness a little more cozy and fun.
Malin Fabbri is one of those very few indeed “agents”. She is a prolific editor, author and artist who devoted a big part of her life to the cause of alternative photography and its practitioners, placing artists from all over the world closer to each other in her website (the most complete of its type globally), whose name couldn’t be other than AlternativePhotography.com and in her several books on the subject as well.
The newest result of her unflagging enthusiasm and work is the book “Pure Inspiration #2 Colour”, a stunning volume which depicts the artworks of more than 140 artists who, through various and often sophisticated artistic processes, dared to bring colour to a medium usually monochrome. The book is an invitation into the beauties of several alternative photographic processes, which are by themselves already fascinating, but with another layer of intricacies and amazement added to them in colours.

Through the chapters organised according to the various techniques presented on the book the reader will find a short bio of the artists and will also have insights on every particular variation of method used by each artist. That later aspect is pretty important because those personal variations introduced on techniques such as anthotypes, cyanotypes, and layered gum bichromates are what turn them into technical and aesthetic experiences that results in truly unique works of art.
Nevertheless, for the sake of being not “just” a catalog depicting art works but to be a comprehensive guide on the artistic techniques shown in its pages, the book also brings a complete glossary and very much needed considerations about the safety aspects of manipulating potentially harmful chemicals.
With all of that, we consider that readers of “Pure Inspiration #2” may have enough reasons to be genuinely inspired being them either artists who want to expand their abilities and the aesthetical impact of their works, or people from the general public who may have their personal aesthetical epiphany that may lead them to be future artists as well.
