“Self-Portrait (Plum Shiso)” by Jamie Lee Ohland
Country: Milwaukee, WI, USA
Parts used: Leaves and tender stems
Amount: Rounded handful
Extracted by: Blender and mesh strainer
Thinner: Equal parts water and vodka (1/2 ounce each)
Application: Brushing (squirrel hair brush)
Layers: 4
Substrate: Rives BFK Printmaking paper
Created with: Photogram of shiso leaves using a contact frame
Exposure: 2.5 hours, August, summer 2023
Contrast: ✿✿ (Medium)
Challenges or observations: The positive image turns green while the exposed emulsion bleaches slightly. This allows for opportunities for multiple exposures.
Additional information: I’m currently experimenting with multiple exposures and a process I am calling “mixed media anthotype,” where I go back in after the initial exposure and reapply plant emulsions to re-expose and/or black ink to selectively stop the developing process in certain areas. The results are thrilling, but I didn’t think they were appropriate to submit due to their veering off the traditional path.

Plum shiso (Perilla frutescens) anthotype by Jamie Lee Ohland
This anthotype is part of World Anthotype Day
World Anthotype Day was started by AlternativePhotography.com in 2022. In August anthotype artists all over the world celebrate the anthotype process and send in their entries. We add them here to the database and create a reference book for each year. The purpose of the day is to build a large resource where artist can learn which pigmenets and plants that work and draw inspiration from other artists' work. The reference books can be found here:

Volume 1 contains 60 unique anthotype emulsions from 103 artists taking part from 31 countries.
Anthotype Emulsions, Volume 1 – The collective research from photographers on World Anthotype Day 2022

Volume 2 contains 100 unique anthotype emulsions from 139 artists taking part from 31 countries.
