“Lorde and Savior” by Mirelle Medina
Country: Mexico City, Mexico
Parts used: Beet
Amount: Handful of beet; 2 tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate
Extracted by: Blender
Thinner: Ethyl alcohol, 71.5 percent
Application: Sponge swabs
Layers: 3 layers of beet, 1 layer of sodium bicarbonate
Substrate: Watercolour paper
Created with: Positive on OHP paper; crochet cotton string
Exposure: 5 days, July, summer 2023
Contrast: ✿✿ (Medium)
Challenges or observations: The beet emulsion mixed with ethyl alcohol varied its colour applied in different types of paper, depending on the acidity of the paper and the amount of cotton. Sodium bicarbonate intervened with spots barely that changed colour after exposure.
Additional information: The photograph used for this anthotype was taken by me last year during Lorde’s concert in Mexico City for her Solar Power World Tour. This anthotype was produced for the Anthotype workshop at Pilares Pantitlán in Iztacalco, Mexico City, for a collective experiment with members of the neighborhood.

This anthotype is part of World Anthotype Day
World Anthotype Day was started by AlternativePhotography.com in 2022. In August anthotype artists all over the world celebrate the anthotype process and send in their entries. We add them here to the database and create a reference book for each year. The purpose of the day is to build a large resource where artist can learn which pigmenets and plants that work and draw inspiration from other artists' work. The reference books can be found here:

Volume 1 contains 60 unique anthotype emulsions from 103 artists taking part from 31 countries.
Anthotype Emulsions, Volume 1 – The collective research from photographers on World Anthotype Day 2022
