Workshop: 3-day beginners print enclosure/book arts workshop with Matt Magruder, Mountain Intaglio Studio, Asheville North Carolina, 10th – 12th August 2026

Stay up to date! Get the monthly newsletter and be notified of new how-to articles, new artists and our alternative processes events.

This workshop is appropriate for photographers and printmakers interested in finding ways to present their work in a creative manner that enhances their subject. No previous bookmaking experience is required.

The class participants will be begin by learning the fundamental techniques of box construction by making a simple cloth-covered clamshell portfolio box that holds a stack of standard-sized prints – typically this will be an 8×10 or 10×12 size box. Measuring, board cutting, fabric cutting and gluing and pasting are some of the techniques that will be covered.

Once the basic process is familiar, each participant will design and construct a more involved print enclosure. The adornments and additions might be as simple as an embossed inset for a nameplate on the box cover, or as complicated as a set of sliding drawers containing individual prints. Matt will act as a guide in selecting an approach that matches both the desire and abilities of each student.
