Sonja Schaeffeler is a photographer and graphic designer venturing into the cyanotype process, experimenting with dry and wet cyanotype and toning. She is particularly drawn to plants and blossoms.
From: Egg, Zurich, Switzerland.
Shows: Botanical cyanotypes
As a photographer, Sonja Schaeffeler is interested in all forms of photography and loves working with light. Professionally she made the switch from analogue to digital photography at the time but continued experimenting with cult cameras such as the Holga or handmade pinhole cameras. It is the lack of precision she loves the most: vignetting, blur, light leaks, color shifts, and other distortions.
As recently as 2020 Sonja Schaeffeler became interested in the cyanotype process and discovered the beauty of botanical blueprints. Her way of working is intuitive, she loves the beauty and transience of leaves and blossoms, their brief lifespan a metaphor for our human lives – in making botanical blueprints she perpetuates them on paper. She exhibited her botanical cyanotypes in 2023 in Switzerland (first solo show).
“My cyanotypes are the result of joyfully being in the flow – working on them is a way to process and transform my thoughts of change, hope and meaning and the observations I make in nature.”
