Simon Ashmore is an artist from Kent in Southeast England who combines a range of photographic techniques and processes, often including alternative printing processes, to create expressive and sometimes abstract images.
From: Kent, England.
Shows: Argyrotypes, Cyanotypes and Salt prints.
Time, memory, mortality and hope are reoccurring themes in Simon Ashmore’s work.
“Alternative printing techniques are both a joy and a torture. Satisfying results can be elusive, but when the process works well, the resultant prints radiate a character and intrigue that cannot be achieved by other means.”
Though an experienced practitioner of alternative print processes – including Salt prints, Argyrotypres, Van Dyke Brown, liquid emulsion and Cyanotypes – Simon Ashmore doesn’t claim mastery over any of them.
“It’s a continual process of refinement. I often feel that I’m one print away from giving up, as the latest ‘masterpiece’ slides off the paper in the wash, or a tiny blemish ruins an otherwise perfect print. But persistence eventually brings rewards.”
Simon exhibits widely and his first book ‘I Am Not The Rain’, which includes Salt prints, Cyanotypes and digital images overlaid onto painted backgrounds, was published in 2020 by Kozu Press.
Simon is currently working on a new series of images of the shoreline using Argyroptye and Van Dyke Brown prints – some of which are featured in this gallery.
