Paul Ligas works with anthotypes, sometimes digitally altering them to reveal hidden details, or blending them with digital photographs or watercolour textures. This creates wider opportunities to explore the environmental values that drive him.
From: Ledbury, United Kingdom.
Shows: Anthotypes, and anthotypes digitally altered or combined with digital photographs and watercolour paintings.
Paul Ligas is a self-taught photographer and photographic artist living in Ledbury, Herefordshire, born and raised in southern Ontario, Canada. Driven by his values of supporting environment and community he works with anthotype images, specialising in plants available in the countryside surrounding him, both as subjects and sources of emulsions. He is interested in blending traditional anthotype imagery with digital photography, opening up new possibilities. He works to inspire others to have a fresh understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
In 2022, collaborating with two poets, Paul Ligas created an exhibition – People of the Hop Harvest – supported by Arts Council England that showed around the West Midlands. During 2023/24 he is exploring the suitability and seasonality of UK-native sources of emulsions for anthotype prints with a grant from Arts Council England.
“Working with anthotype emulsions gives me a genuine thrill every time I peel back the object to see what image the plant and sun have given me. I learn something new every time.”
