Shows: Cyanotypes and Salt prints

Paige Billin-Frye is an artist, photographer, illustrator and hand-bookbinder living in Washington, DC. She began printing photos when she was a kid with her dad in their home darkroom where they used the same enlarger that her dad had printed on with his own dad. She also has worked as an illustrator in children’s publishing for several decades.

For the past decade, she has been exploring 19th-century historic photo processes, specifically cyanotypes and salt prints. She likes the fact that the emulsions can be painted onto a variety of papers. She tones the cyanotypes with plants, working through the many growing in her yard. Sometimes she paints her photos with watercolors and incorporates the photos into hand-bound books, combining all of her interests.

Paige Billin-Frye has an interest in depicting urban areas as places where living things grow, both the plants and the people. She is a member of the Handmade Photo Group at Photoworks in Glen Echo, Maryland, where a cadre of photographers gather on a regular basis to explore historical photo techniques together.
