Marian Fannon Christian is a British/Irish artist who has travelled extensively. She grew up in beautiful and primitive surroundings in Co. Mayo on the west coast of Ireland where there was no running water or electricity and all work had to be done by hand.

As a child she became involved in all aspects of everyday life. She walked with a bucket to the local well to draw water and went fishing with her grandfather and dug the worms to use as bait. She watched her beloved grandmother make Irish soda bread every day, and watched it bake over an open fire. Her mother taught her to knit at the age of five. It is possible that her love of art and craft and ‘doing things by hand’ was born at this time.

Marian travelled extensively for almost thirty years and has lived in Hong Kong, The Philippines, Indonesia, India and Ireland. She now lives in Leeds in the north of England with her artist husband, Anthony. She has a daughter born in The Philippines, a son born in Hong Kong and a granddaughter she hopes will inherit her love of art and nature.

Marian Fannon Christian enjoys working with ink, pastels, watercolours, acrylics and cyanotypes, often combining them in her creations.

Discovering beauty in unexpected forms and unexpected places has prompted Marian to create an abstract visual language rooted in the natural world. She is in a constant search of that which is ‘on the other side’, the transcendental. That is reflected in her asemic writing pieces. She hopes her art, whatever the medium, conveys a sense of serenity, allowing the viewer to re-live an atmospheric memory in their relationship to nature.

“There is magic and mystery in creating a cyanotype, a powerful feeling of the need simply to allow nature to do its work, knowing it will be beautiful.”
