While traditional photography never captured her interest, Kate Durham has found her artistic home in a sea of blue cyanotypes. With the passion of a mad scientist, she thrives in the detail-oriented process of cyanotype printing, embracing its intricacies, experimentation, and problem-solving challenges. Compelled by the rich history and community surrounding this unique art form, she aims to expand the boundaries of traditional cyanotype processes by joining her prints with watercolor, collage, digital art, poetry, and illustration.

Central to Kate’s artistic practice is a deep investigation of transition and impermanence, whether in physical spaces or life stages. Her connection to the Midwest, particularly Ohio, features prominently in her work. She creates meditative pieces that speak to the universal experience of finding and creating home, while examining the complexity of putting down roots in imperfect places. Kate draws particular inspiration from her family’s history, in particular, the women who helped shape her understanding of place and belonging. By weaving together cyanotype processes, family photographs, and poetry, she aims to explore her connection to the women in her family through their shared sacrifices, daily rituals, and roles as memory-keepers.

Kate currently lives in Columbus, Ohio, and works in arts administration at a nonprofit gallery. Through her journey with cyanotypes, she has found community with many other artists and enjoys encouraging artists from other disciplines to experiment with alternative processes. Moving forward, she hopes to expand her body of work and cyanotype process by experimenting with using fabric and other natural materials as print mediums.
