Hans van Erp was born 1955 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He took up photography in high school in 1969, trained as a professional photographer and has worked freelance for many years.

In the early 1980’s he discovered alternative photography and especially gum bichromate printing when he was researching ways to print and present his personal work. Later on he also took up bromoils, cyanotypes, 3 color gum bichromate and 3 color cyanotype/gum bichromate combinations.

Hans thought that alternative photography was not just a matter of mastering the crafts and skills of the various techniques and making sure that during the process of print-making you don’t cut corners, it was also a matter of being in the right state of mind during the process.

Hans said that when he had an “off” day, it will show up in the print. Although he had done nothing differently, it’s just not right. Luckily it worked the other way around as well.

At the end Hans worked solely as a fine art photographer and his work has been exhibited in Europe and The United States and is included in several private collections. Hans tragically passed away in 2007.

Hans said:

“I am still fascinated by the way I can transform my pictures with alternative photographic techniques to images that seem to originate from an other dimension, like tangible keepsakes from a dream.”
