Elsiena Wiering is a Dutch visual artist living in Málaga Spain since 2017. She grew up Een, a small village in Drenthe on a farm as the second child of four. After a career as an ICT professional, she decided, at age 33, to attend the Academy of Minerva, Fine Arts in Groningen, where she graduated with a Bachelor ́s degree in 2012.
Since then she joined several groups- duo and solo shows in the Netherlands and abroad and was a member of the Dutch Society for Sculptures (NKVB) until she decided to move to the South of Spain in 2017. This lifestyle change was accompanied by a change in her body of work; from monochrome 3-dimensional sculptures that stood firm on the ground with a cement base, her work developed into a more airy, playful way of self-expression.
Whatever medium she chooses to work in, her works are characterised by the reductional approach in a search for essence. Her visual language is often characterised as cheerful, minimalist and fresh.
These collages on paper are an ode to the summer that she experiences daily at the Costa del Sol. She used the traditional alternative photographic cyanotype process, a cheerful dance between sunlight and water. The sun turns the surface blue. The water stops the process and reveals the positive of the negative and the negative of the positive.
The viewer is invited to wander through these different layers of water reflections alternating bold cutouts, representing the expansion of water ripples.
“Like a scuba diver that feels the pressure of the water around him while deep-diving, in a large radius around me I felt the air become thick, filled with vibrant cells, eager to materialize.”
