Anna Atkins tribute calendar – the calendar is here!

As many cyanotypers know, Anna Atkins was a pioneer and the first person to make a book with photographs. We are announcing a call for entries to create cyanotypes in Anna Atkins’ style. 12 cyanotypes will be selected for a calendar.

Unlock the beauty of nature with Anna Atkins

180 years ago, in 1843, the first book of photographs was published by Anna Atkins. To mark this we want to make a diary or calendar of “Anna Atkins’ tribute prints” that is leaves, plants, feathers and lace arranged in a print.

The plan is to sell the calendar in 2024 and in any subsequent years, any profits from sales of the calendar will contribute towards the costs of running AlternativePhotography.com.

How to prepare:

About the event:

  • Opens: Open NOW!
  • Deadline: 16th of March (Anna Atkins’ birthday), midnight, your own timezone
  • It is free to enter, one entry per person, and the event is open to Supporting Members. If you are unsure if you are a member, email us at talk@alternativephotography.com and we’ll look it up.
  • Enter by filling out the entry form here if you have any problems with the form or can’t sign in, email us on talk(at)alternativephotography.com  and we’ll help.

About your Anna Atkins cyanotype:

  • The print has to be a cyanotype photogram.
  • It has to be in “Anna Atkins’ style“, which means plants, feathers or lace arranged on the print.
  • A label is optional but a nice touch.
  • By entering you give permission to AlternativePhotography.com to use your print as stated in the terms and conditions below. Make sure you read “The small print” i.e the Terms and conditions below in its entirety before you submit your work. By submitting your work you agree to be bound by the Terms and Conditions of the agreement. If you do not agree, do not continue your submission. Our aim for this event is to publish an Anna Atkins Calendar, diary or/and or journal depending on how many submissions we get. We may publish the diary, calendar and/or journal for one or several years. It may be used in different forms such as a wall calendar, desk calendar, journal or diary depending on how many Works are submitted. You will not receive monetary compensation for your work, any profits will go towards running AlternativePhotography.com. Your work will be published with the proper credit. We may or may not also use your work on our website, social media channels and newsletter to promote the event.
  • The selection of the final Works to be included will be both by voting in social media and a jury consisting of Malin Fabbri, Christina Z. Andersson, Annette Golaz, Christoper James and Rolf Sachsse.

  • At the beginning of March, we will also post them on our social media channels.
  • After the event closes on the 16th of March the jury will gather to select 12 prints. (If there are a huge amount of entries, we will try to make it 52 somehow).
  • The winners will be announced and a calendar created for 2024. If it is popular we will create calendars for subsequent years too.
