“Black Lace” by Tracy Piper-Wright
Country: Ellesmere, Shropshire, UK
Parts used: Berries
Amount: 4 tablespoons
Extracted by: Cooking, mortar then strained. The berries were soaked in water for 3 days prior to cooking
Thinner: Tap water
Application: Brushing
Layers: 5
Substrate: Watercolour paper, 190 gsm
Created with: Inkjet printed OHP positive from a direct scan of Black Elder leaves and stems
Exposure: 3 days, August, summer 2023
Contrast: ✿✿ (Medium)
Challenges or observations: It is probably better to blend the berries rather than cook them to create a richer emulsion. I had to boil off excess water to create a stronger hue. The development was slow in prolonged cloudy conditions.
Additional information: In strong sun, the emulsion reacted well with an exposure in 5-6 hours. The emulsion smelled lovely!
