HELLO:
LES COOK OF “ANCIENT MAGIC ART” IS ONE OF THOSE RARE INDIVIDUALS WHO DOES EXCELLENT WORK FOR A VERY SMALL NICHE MARKET. I HAVE ONE OF HIS HALF-PLATE CAMERAE OBSCURAE (EXCUSE MY BEING GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT WITH LATIN WORDS), AND AM ALWAYS PLEASED TO SHOW ATTENDEES OF MY LECTURES AND DEMONSTRATIONS WHAT THE “REAL THING” LOOKS LIKE. AFTER THE HOLIDAY SEASON, HE HAS AGREED TO WORK WITH ME ON MAKING A PHOTOGRAPHIC SLIDING BOX CAMERA OBSCURA, THE TYPE USED BY THE FRENCH MASTERS OF THE CALOTYPE IN THE 1850’S. IF WE COULD LOCATE GUSTAVE LE GRAY’S BONES (THEY WERE “LOST” WHEN THE MONKS WHO OWNED THE CEMETERY IN WHICH HE WAS BURIED SOLD THE LAND AND HIS REMAINS DISPOSED OF — WHO KNOWS WHERE), THOSE BONES WOULD JUMP FOR JOY (TO QUOTE SIR JOHN HERSCHEL WHEN WRITING TO HIS FRIEND HENRY TALBOT): “IF YOU WOULD EVER DO SUCH A THING!!”
FOR THE REAL PURISTS IN HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPHY, PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING THIS CRAFTSMAN YOUR ATTENTION, AND, BETTER STILL, YOUR SUPPORT.
