Challenges or observations: Colour can be extracted from redwood cones using water, but the process is slower and produces a less intense result. The pigment varies from cone to cone, with no clear pattern related to cone age—except that very young, unopened cones and very old, fully dried cones contained no usable colour. During exposure, the initial red-purple fades quickly within the first day, but with more time, the colour shifts to orange and gradually darkens.
Additional information: Redwood cone pigment can also be combined with ferrous sulfate or rusty iron nails in a white vinegar solution to produce a dark ink, similar to traditional oak gall ink, due to its tannic acid content.
