Merete Lien, a Norwegian photographer, creates evocative works combining beauty with themes of loss, using alternative processes like Van Dyke and cyanotype. Her art has been exhibited internationally.
From: Tydal, Norway
Shows: Cyanotypes, Salt prints and Vandykes
Merete Lien was born in 1956, grew up in the city of Trondheim, but now lives in Tydal – a small mountain village in central Norway. She is a self-taught photographer, who also works as a graphic designer and illustrator. Lien is a member of the Association of Free Photographers in Norway, where she has taken part in joint exhibitions. One of her photographs was purchased by Arts Counsil Norway.
Merete Lien works with analogue cameras as well as digital photography. But has a particular fondness for working with van Dyke and cyanotypes in large format. Her images often reflect beauty in combination with the painful sadness of death and loneliness.
Merete Lien has always been fascinated by the photographic alternative processes and took a course with the artist Galina Manikova in 2007. She has also participated at workshops with Jill Enfield (Nordphotography) and Mark and France Scully Osterman, which all led to a deeper understanding of alternative photography, and the possibilities that the processes provide.
She has had several separate exhibitions and participated in several joint exhibitions in Norway, but also in the USA. Special mention of the Asmith Gallery in Texas.
“Creating the photograph on a white canvas of Arches, following the process from exposure in the sun, and developing further through all four elements to a finished work is incredibly fascinating.”
