Trevor Lund trained as a physicist and spent most of his career as an engineer, but has had an abiding interest in photography since his teens. Work in the darkroom, processing plates for physics experiments, led to him developing and printing his own films, and enjoying the extra control he thus obtained over the finished product. Married to an artist for over forty years, he has been led into appreciating progressively more the aesthetic possibilities of photography, rather than just treating it as a recording medium.

After making the transition from film to digital capture, he now does most of his processing digitally to obtain the increased precision and reproducibility available. However, he still hankers after the darkroom and the chemical production of prints, and gets a lot of satisfaction from the cyanotype process, using simple chemicals to coat the paper, and finishing the process after exposure by simply washing in water. Whilst most of his printing is done in full colour on a large format printer, when he finds a suitable image he will create a monotone digital negative to make a print using the cyanotype process.

“I love the involvement of the hands-on process of cyanotype making. This is something I miss in the all-digital process, and I get even more satisfaction from handling the finished print.”
