“Smooth Sailing” by Robin Moseley
Country: Elgin, Illinois, USA
Parts used: Berries picked in Columbus, Ohio
Amount: ½ cup of berries
Extracted by: Mortar and pestle
Thinner: 91% alcohol
Application: Large artists round brush applied both horizontally & vertically
Layers: 2 coats
Substrate: Canson 140 lb Montval Watercolour paper
Created with: Printed paper positives waxed on back for transparency
Exposure: June 28-July 11, 2023 mostly sunny 6-8 hours per day, summer, 2023
Contrast: ✿ (Low)
Challenges or observations: Development was slow over a sunny two week period. Clear transparencies would have improved contrast. The wonderful color and results were good and well worth trying again next year when the June berries ripen again!
Additional information or observations: I placed several paper positives on the substrate along with a short strip of an undeveloped dark film negative to monitor progress. The dark negative allowed viewing the contrast between the fully exposed substrate, very dense film strip, and the paper positive. The light areas of the paper positive were distinctly darker on the print than the fully exposed areas. The dark areas under the negative strip were darker than the dark areas under the paper positive.
