How to post images to the gallery

The galleries are now open again for entries. We are looking for artists who actively work in alternative photographic processes. If this is you, please read the text below (even if it's long!) and follow the directions for sending your work in. Welcome!

How to be one of the 289 artists in the gallery:

Please email your images to us on:

put "Gallery request" in the subject heading.

The images should be 500 pixels wide or tall, scanned at 72 dpi, if you don't know how to do this, we can resize the images, but we can't increase the size, so don't send small thumbnails. Name the files with the titles of the images. If your name is Andy Smith and the image is called "Blue Flower" please name the file with your initials and the name: as_blue_flower.jpg.

Don't forget to tell us which alternative process you used.

If you have sent images and not received an email back, it means they didn't reach us. We responde to ALL requests for gallery pages. Put "Gallery request" in the subject heading.

Also send a short Biography, written in third person i.e. "Robert took up photograpy as a young boy..." between 100-200 words. It's nice with a personally written Biography rather than a list of places your work has exhibited. Include a small image of yourself, 100x100 pixels and a quote between 10-30 words, written in first person. I.e. "I am drawn to the cyanotype process..." - this is optional.

If you can, please send the whole package as a zip file. Otherwise, just attach them to an email as usual.

Please note that we only accept alternative processed images, since the site is dedicated to this. I'll say this again: we ONLY accept alternative processed images. (You'll be surprised at the amount of 'straight' or 'digital' work we get sent!).

The objective of the gallery is to give artists exposure on the site and in the newsletter, leading to many good contacts. As you can guess, this amounts to a fair amount of work. It is therefor a requirement that you become a supporting member of the site. The cost for this is only 35 dollars a year and goes towards running costs of the site and promoting artists (your) work. Nothing else. Noone gets paid and we also pay bills for the site out of our own pocket. Click here to become a member.

If your work is accepted, it should be published within a couple of weeks, and you can start enjoying the benefits of being an artist on the site. But, please note, sometimes there are a lot requests for galleries and it can take some time before your work is added.

The Alt. proc. Showcase

As an artist in our galleries you can also send us one or more of your prints that you feel represent your work. This will be used in the Alternative Processes Showcase to promote this site and to promote artists that display their work on the site. You will get sent more information about this if you have a gallery on this site. You can also read more here.

Digital and Pinhole photography

The way we see it is that which camera was used is irrelevant. If it was a 35mm, digital or pinhole, doesn't matter, what matters is that an alternative process was used before, during or after the image was taken. It is more interesting to see how different techniques can be combined.

For examle a photograph that is taken with a digital camera and printed out as a negative. The negative is then developed using an alternative process. OR a pinhole and cyanotype is combined. Or any other way your experimenting come up with.

This may seem controversial to the hard-core alt. proc. purists or historians, but we feel that limiting the way a negative is created is limiting creativity. Alternative processes are sometimes very technical and embracing new technologies and combining new and old is a positive thing.

Anything except NUDES...

Please note that we don't accept nude photography, even if they are done in a very tasteful manner. We don't like too many rules, but there are a couple of reasons:

  • This site is open to everyone that includes educational institutions and cultures where nudity is offensive.
  • Access would be limited for people with children that have their 'adult' filter on, and people surfing at work where companies have these filters in place.
  • A lot of servers will block us AOL for example automatically filters out sites that contain nudity from their search engines. That means people wouldn't find us.

Apart from that... any other subject is good. And if you're not sure if your images would be accepted or not, please ask.

Updating your gallery

We realize that making changes and keeping your gallery up to date is important. Changes take time. Although we wish we could accommodate all requests, we realize this is not realistic and we have to start charging for this service. Updates to galleries will cost 10 dollars. We hope this will accomplish two things:

  • That artists carefully consider their portfolio before sending us updates to their gallery.
  • All changes are consolidated into one "big" change.
(Updates to your email or contact details will continue to be free.)

To pay the update fee, go here and press the donation button and pay in 10 dollars. Then, send us a mail to and we will get it done over the next few weeks.
