Historical photographic methods in use today – the art, processes and techniques of alternative photography. Photography as it should be: hands on, fun and inspiring.
Devon Johnson holds a BFA in Photography from Richmond’s Virginia Commonwealth University. He specializes in archaic and historic photographic practices, which he hopes to preserve and promote as an educator and practitioner. Johnson's work is shot with large format cameras, and Contact printed using historical silver-based printing techniques.
Devon says:
"My work deals with the complexities, legacies, and myths surrounding early American history. Currently, my focus is on documenting historical sites that suffer from mistreatment and neglect. My intention is to draw light to the fact that as a society we care very little about our collective history. I hope that this work will inspire the viewer to question what is currently happening to these places. My purpose is not to glorify the events that occurred at these sites; rather, my aim is to show that our memory of them is slowly fading from our view and that these sites should not be forgotten."
