Historical photographic methods in use today – the art, processes and techniques of alternative photography. Photography as it should be: hands on, fun and inspiring.
Jon Lybrook has been working in art-based photography for nearly 40 years since taking his first class at age 8. He studied filmmaking at Bard College and learned about the abstract expressionist film movement which got him interested in painting on 16mm movie film -- eventually this led to painting on large format still film with photochemicals. Jon Lybrook's Chemigrams and Luminograms series has been an on-going part of his larger body of work.
In 2003 Lybrook learned of polymer photogravure through a workshop with David Hoptman, found it to be a beautiful medium in which to work, and got hooked. Using photogravure polymer plates to print straight monochromatic photographs as well as using a la poupee to locally add multiple colors to his abstract pieces, Jon's work strives to achieve a balance between technical and aesthetic precision.
In 2006 Jon began making prints and polymer photogravure plates for other artists and printmakers commercially through his company Intaglio Editions. Jon Lybrook also runs Tera Bear Consulting near Boulder, Colorado which manages website and web application development projects. When not working, playing or printing he enjoys nature hikes, aikido, Vipassana meditation, and going to concerts with his wife Bonnie.
"I like to work with and meditate on ideas and processes linked to nature through art. Printmaking is a very process-oriented craft and so the moments to be creative with new ideas are very special and important." - Jon Lybrook
