The book of art and artists

If you are one of the 331 artists with a gallery on AlternativePhotography.com you can have your work published in Alternative Photography: Art and Artists, Edition I.

>> The deadline for edition I is now closed!!! <<

All artists (for whom we have a current email adress) will be notified about entries for edition II. A note will also be sent out in the newsletter. Subscribe for free and you'll know about it.

The purpose of the book

The objective of the book is to give artists exposure which will hopefully lead to many good contacts. We're hoping that this coffee table book will be the source of inspiration to artists and a reference guide for galleries. Depending on the amount of work, the interest in the book and the addition of artists to the site the book will be updated on a regular basis - hopefully yearly.

As you can guess, this amounts to a fair amount of work, so inclusion in the book will only be available to artists that are supporting members of the site. The cost for this is only 35 dollars a year and goes towards running costs of the site and promoting artists, (your) work. Nothing else. No one gets paid and we also pay bills for the site out of our own pocket. Read more about becoming a member here.

How to be part of the book

Please email two images and information to us at:

The information we need is:

  • 2 images that you feel represent your work
  • titles of the images, the process used (the images can be made using two different processes)
  • description: how you made the images and why you choose to work with that particlular process - 100 words totally for both. The description should be written in a personal style, i.e. "I work with cyanotypes because..."
  • bio - 100 words. The bio should include the city and country you're active in. It should be written in third person i.e. "Anna currently works as a photographer in Boston, she...".
  • contact details in the form of an email and a website (optional).

We will then email you a release form that allows us to publish your work. You will of course still retain the copyright to your work. Sign the form and return it to us as soon as possible by ordinary post. The address will be emailed to you.

If you have sent images and not received an email back, it means they didn't reach us. We responde to ALL emails.

Please note that as on the website we only accept alternative processed images, since the book will be dedicated to this.

Deadline!

Please send all the information and the release form to us by the 1st of September. Or, even better, do it now if you can.

What will it look like?

The size of the book will be approx 21,5 x 28 cm or 8,5 x 11 inches. One spread will be dedicated to each artist. See examle of how it may look here. (Some changes may be done to type and layout before publication).

File sizes

To ensure as good quality as possible, your images must be of a high resolution. A landscape image must be 17 cm / 6,7 inches wide at 300 dpi. A portrait shaped image must be 16,3 cm / 6,4 inches high at 300 dpi. Less than this and the quality will suffer and your work will not look good.

When and where can I get the book?

The book will be published by AlternativePhotography.com and we aim to published it in time for Christmas 2006. It will be for sale here on AlternativePhotography.com, on Amazon and a couple of other places. All artists that have their work in the book will be able to buy copies at a discount. We will let you know the prices as soon as possible.

Anything except NUDES...

The same rules apply for the book as for the website, please note that we don't accept nude photography, even if they are done in a very tasteful manner. We don't like too many rules, but there are reasons:

  • This book may be used in education that includes educational institutions and cultures where nudity is offensive.

Apart from that... any other subject is good. And if you're not sure if your images would be accepted or not, please ask.
