Robert A. Schaefer, Jr. is a visual explorer in love with layering. His work focuses on the prominent interplay between spatial planes and a central image. Visual layers are then added to that image in much the same way a painter uses watercolors. Each layer is clearly visible but at the same time transparent. This visual clarity evokes a sense of honesty and provocation which becomes an alluring invitation to the viewer. The essence of each image makes it unique yet universal - a frozen story, an art of seeing.
Robert was born in the teeny, tiny town of Cullman, Alabama and in 1975 he received his BA of Architecture Degree from Auburn University. He moved to Munich, Germany where he studied photography, architecture and theatre and graduated in 1978 with a MA of Architecture (Diplom Ingenieur Architekt).
Robert's 25 Year Rettrospective was shown at the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, AL (October 24, 1999 - February 13, 2000) - a milestone in his career.
In 1981 Schaefer moved to New York City where he still lives and photographs.
